2016 EVENTS FOR FLEET MEMBERS

Below is a list of this year’s events and races for fleet participation.    We will send out this list periodically to help you keep up-to-date with planned fleet activities.  With better and advanced warning, it is hoped that more of you will be able participate in our Cal 20 events.
Our fleet is made up of over 50 cruisers and racers.  We try to schedule events throughout the year for members to enjoy, whether as a racer or a cruiser.  Many of these activities are brought to you at little or no cost; your fleet dues and moorage fees pay the costs.
For our racers, we designate certain regattas and evening series for the Cals to participate in as a one-design fleet.  These races are the counters for fleet standings and for the trophies we award each year.
This year I hope to see more of you at the various events and races.  Remember, it is your fleet. You pay for it, so come out and enjoy our activities, both on and off the water.

CAL 20 SPECIAL BREW

It’s time to bottle the latest batch of beer brewed by the Cal 20 Fleet.    If you’d like to help out and drink a few beers in the process, meet at Portland U-Brew at Noon Sunday, March 13.   Address is 6237 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland (Sellwood neighborhood), next door to the San Felipe Taqueria where you can get excellent fish tacos and other food items to go with your beer.    It’s great fun …

PLEASE BRING EMPTY / CLEAN BEER BOTTLES IF YOU HAVE THEM.

PORTLAND BOAT SHOW TIME

We’re having an ice storm, so it must be time for the Portland Boat Show – right ?

If you’re been eagerly awaiting the call for volunteers, please be advised that the Cal 20 Fleet WILL NOT have an exhibit in this year’s show.

Supporting our usual display requires a lot of set up work and the time of many volunteers.  We received information earlier last year that led us to make the decision to not participate.

CAMPBELL RIVERS – FORMER FLEET 7 MEMBER

There is a story about Campbell in today’s edition of ‘Lectronic Latitude.
Campbell sailed with the Portland Cal 20 Fleet in the “early days” when he was just a kid.  Some of you will remember him. His boat was called Body Check.  It has been renamed a few times but I think is still in the Fleet.
He could really use our support.   Read his story at:

CYC NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR RACE COMMITTEE

CYC’s Summer Evening racing series has begun!   They will be running races Tuesday and Thursday evenings through September 10th and need volunteers to help set and pull marks, hold flags for the start sequences, check in boats, and write down finish times.

CYC relies on volunteers to help run the races.  They have a committee boat, a mark boat, and a principal race officer who keeps everything moving, but they need a few people per night to help out.

There are multiple fleets racing each night and it’s always worth watching.  On either the race committee boat or mark boat, you get a front row seat for the action.  It’s a great way to learn more about how the races work.
Volunteers should be at McCuddy’s Marina at 2915 NE Marine Dr at 5:00 PM with a life jacket and any clothing or beverages you might want.

Sign up at at http://vols.pt/p24o1S or email race.captain@cycportland.org with questions or to let them know you’re coming.

Feel free to send the volunteer link to a friend!  It’s an awesome way to introduce people to river racing.

CAL 20 CAMP OUT – NEXT WEEKEND

JULY 31 THRU AUGUST 2
GOVERNMENT ISLANDEAST DOCK
This is a fun, social, kid-friendly event for Cal 20- owners, family and friends.   Water toys are welcome.

Some folks will go on Friday; some will arrive Saturday and spend the day or the weekend. Keep in mind the trip up river can take several hours.

Sleep in your Cal 20 or pitch a tent in the grassy area.    If you want to come up river by some other means, feel free.   Some folks will bring their larger sailboats or may arrive in a power boat.
Bring coolers with ice, water, and personal food and beverages.   There is no running water on the island, so plan accordingly.
If you have one, a small portable gas grill would be a big help in feeding the group.    Bring chairs, small tables, canopies, kitchen supplies, trash bags, etc.
Bring your own dinner for Friday.  Saturday evening meal will be provided by the FLEET – usually a cooler full of steaks for the group.    Please bring potluck items to round out the meal.

Also think about what you can bring for breakfast along with snacks and beverages to share throughout the weekend to add to the social atmosphere.
See how much fun it can be to be part of our unique Cal 20 Fleet here in Portland.
